DISPLAY AND SAFETY REGULATION

A Safety and Display Team will check your project for compliance to these rules at registration on Friday night before you leave.

Unacceptable for Display

1. Living organisms (e.g., plants, animals, microbes)

2. Taxidermy specimens or parts

3. Preserved vertebrate or invertebrate animals (includes embryos)

4. Human or animal food (Exceptions: sealed containers of food dye mixture)

5. Plant materials (living, dead, or preserved) usually which were part of the scientific experimentation and which are in their raw, unprocessed, or non-manufactured state (Exception: manufactured, construction materials used in building the project or display)

6. Laboratory/household chemicals including water (Exceptions: water integral to an enclosed apparatus or water supplied by the Display and Safety Committee)

7. Human/animal parts or body fluids (e.g., blood, urine) (Exceptions: teeth, hair, nails, dried animal bones, histological dry mount sections, and completely sealed wet mount tissue slides)

8. Sharp items (for example, razor blades, needles, pipettes, knives)

9. Poisons, drugs, controlled substances, hazardous substances or devices (i.e., firearms, weapons, ammunition, reloading devices)

10. Dry ice or other sublimating solids (i.e., solids which vaporize to a gas without passing through a liquid phase)

11. Flames or highly flammable materials

12. Empty tanks that previously contained combustible liquids or gases, UNLESS certified as having been purged with carbon dioxide.

13. Batteries with open top cells.

14. Photographs or other visual presentations depicting vertebrate animals in surgical techniques, dissections, necropsies, other lab techniques, improper handling methods, improper housing conditions, etc.

15. Awards, medals, business cards, flags, etc. (Exception: The current year Intel ISEF medal may be worn al all times.)

16. Photographs or other visual images of humans must have signed informed consent forms (ex. test subjects). Informed consent form must be readily visible on the table or in front of the vertical display board. No photographs may be included in any way in the Finalist's Display if they are deemed visually offensive by the Display and Safety Committee.

Acceptable for Display & Operation with Restrictions

1.

Class II lasers

a. must be student operated
b. may be operated only during Display and Safety inspection and during judging
c. posted sign must read "Laser Radiation: Do Not Stare Into Beam"
d. must have protective housing that prevents physical and visual access to beam
e. must be disconnected when not operating

2.

Soil or waste samples if permanently encased in a slab of acrylic.

3.

Large vacuum tubes or dangerous ray-generating devices must be shielded properly.

4.

Pressurized tanks that contained noncombustibles may be allowable if secured.

5.

Any apparatus producing temperatures that will cause physical burns must be adequately insulated.

6.

High-voltage (over 12 volts) equipment must be shielded with a grounded metal box or cage to prevent accidental contact.

7.

High-voltage (over 12 volts) wiring, switches, and metal parts must have adequate insulation and overload safety factors and must be inaccessible to others.

8.

Electric circuits for 125-volt AC must have a nine-foot (min.) cord. The cord must have sufficient load-carrying capacity and be approved by Underwriters Laboratories.

9.

Electrical connections in 125/220-volt circuits must be soldered or made with approved connectors. Wires must be insulated. Voltage greater than 125 volts is not permitted. (Maximums are: 500 watts @ 130 VAC/60 hertz or 250 watts @ 220 VAC/60 hertz).

10.

Bare wire and exposed knife switches may be used only in circuits of 12 volts or less; otherwise, standard enclosed switches are required.

11.

Accomplishments, acknowledgments, addresses other than the Finalist's address, telephone and FAX numbers, and e-mail and Web addresses are allowed only inside research papers or data books.

Acceptable for Display Only (Cannot Be Operated)

1. Any apparatus with unshielded belts, pulleys, chains or moving parts with tension or pinch points.

2. Class III and IV lasers

3. Any device requiring voltage over 125 volts
